FAQ

You can find answers to popular questions about our twinning activities and events here.

What is the history behind Blandford and Mortain’s twinning association?

The two towns were twinned 40 years ago to promote cultural exchange and friendship at a time when partnerships were encouraged between towns with similar attributes in Europe, particularly France and Germany.

Blandford Forum is also twinned with Preetz in Germany

Mortain Bocage is also twinned with Thannhausen in Germany

Why is Blandford twinned with Mortain?

Blandford has ancient links to Mortain in that Robert, Compte de Mortain, who was half brother to William the Conqueror had extensive lands in both communities. Abbeys had been founded in both areas and as far back as the middle ages there were exchange visits by the nuns from Mortain to St Monica’s Priory just outside of Blandford at Spetisbury.

What are the aims of the BMTA?

The aims of the twinning association are to foster the historical, cultural and social links between the two communities; to encourage friendships between families; to strengthen the bond between the two councils; to encourage twinning visits and promote beneficial links wherever possible.

Do I need to speak French?

No. Many members of the BMTA can speak French and some are fluent speakers whilst others are interested in the opportunity to develop their language competence through the cultural exchanges that arise. You can take part in activities without speaking French.

Where can I find more information about upcoming activities?
